Two types of travel insurance are required to participate on your Kilimanjaro climb.

  1. Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance – mandatory entry requirement for all foreign visitors
  2. Comprehensive Travel Insurance – required by Ultimate Kilimanjaro®

Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance

Tanzania requires all foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania to purchase mandatory inbound travel insurance before arrival. This requirement applies to all travelers entering Tanzania through airports, land borders, or seaports. The insurance must be purchased through the official Tanzania inbound travel insurance system and is separate from the travel insurance required by Ultimate Kilimanjaro®.

The mandatory inbound travel insurance:

  • Costs USD $44 per person
  • Is valid for up to 92 days from the date of arrival
  • Covers emergency medical treatment, emergency evacuation, emergency repatriation, and loss of luggage

Travelers must purchase this insurance directly through the official Tanzania insurance portal: https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz

It can also be purchased on arrival at Kilimanjaro airport.

After completing the purchase, you will receive an insurance certificate. Please save a copy and carry it with your travel documents.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Ultimate Kilimanjaro® requires all climbers to have travel insurance to protect their trip investment and provide coverage beyond the mandatory Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance requirement. While Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance provides required entry coverage, it does not replace the comprehensive travel insurance we require for your Kilimanjaro climb.

Trip deposits are non-refundable and balance payments are only partially refundable. A comprehensive travel insurance policy protects your investment against trip cancellation, interruption, delays and unforeseeable expenses.

Standard travel insurance provides coverage for:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Missed connection
  • Travel delay
  • Baggage delay and personal items lost
  • Hurricane and weather
  • Employment layoff
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Emergency medical
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Financial default
  • Terrorism

At a minimum, the insurance should protect you against trip cancellation and trip interruption, should you need to cancel your trip due to circumstances such as training injuries or sickness or emergencies.

Your travel insurance must specifically cover high altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) to be eligible for rescue by Kili MedAir – a private company which provides medical support and helicopter evacuation.

Without a client’s verified travel insurance with this specific coverage, Kili MedAir may not initiate a rescue operation on the mountain. This requirement is not to be confused with coverage for “mountaineering” or “mountain climbing,” which most insurance policies exclude.

Recommended Comprehensive Travel Insurance

For our customers residing in the USA, we recommend that you obtain Travel Guard’s Deluxe, Preferred or Essential plans, which provide coverage for high altitude trekking, trip cancellation, interruption and delay; lost, stolen and damaged baggage; medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation; and luggage delay, for a low cost.

You can compare the Deluxe, Preferred or Essential plans and purchase online through Travel Guard.

We recommend Travel Guard’s Preferred plan with the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade.

Climbers are strongly advised to obtain their comprehensive travel insurance immediately after booking their trip. Travel Guard insurance covers trip cancellation due to pre-existing conditions only when insurance is purchased within 15 days of booking. Clients must be able to provide proof of insurance to staff upon request. Clients who fail to obtain travel insurance will not be allowed to climb.
